The rollover is the part of a Gold IRA people worry about most, and it is actually the most standardized step. The IRS has allowed tax-free rollovers between qualified retirement accounts for decades; a Gold IRA is simply a self-directed IRA on the receiving end.

| 403(b), 457(b) governmental | Yes | Same rules as a 401(k) |
| Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) | Yes | Form TSP-99 after separation or at 59½ |
| Traditional, SEP, SIMPLE IRA | Yes | Via transfer; SIMPLE IRAs must be 2+ years old |
| Roth IRA / Roth 401(k) | Yes | Into a Roth Gold IRA only |

When you are eligible
You can move money from an employer plan when a "distributable event" occurs: you leave the job, reach age 59½, become disabled, or the plan terminates. Some plans allow in-service rollovers earlier; ask the administrator. IRA-to-IRA transfers have no eligibility requirement at all.
Direct vs. indirect rollover: the only distinction that matters
Direct rollover (recommended)
Your old plan sends the money straight to the new custodian, by wire or by a check made out to "Equity Trust FBO [your name]". No tax withholding. No deadline. No limit on frequency.
Indirect rollover (avoid)
The plan sends a check to you, withholding 20% for taxes. You must deposit the full original amount (replacing the 20% from your own pocket) within 60 days or the shortfall is taxed and, under 59½, penalized 10%. Limited to one per 12 months across all your IRAs.
Step-by-step: 401(k) to Gold IRA
Pick a Gold IRA company and open the account
Choose a provider (our 2026 top pick is Noble Gold), complete the custodian application and get your new account number. One to three days.
Contact your 401(k) administrator
Request a direct rollover to your new custodian. Your Gold IRA company usually joins the call or provides the exact wording and the custodian's wire or mailing instructions. Decide whether to roll the full balance or a portion.
Funds arrive at the custodian
Wires take one to three days; mailed checks one to three weeks. The custodian notifies your Gold IRA company when cash is available.
Lock your metals purchase
Your specialist quotes IRS-approved products at a locked price. You sign a purchase direction letter; the custodian pays the dealer from your IRA.
Metal ships to the depository
Insured shipment to Delaware Depository, IDS of Texas or your chosen vault. The depository confirms receipt and your first statement follows.
Timeline and paperwork
| Document | Who provides it | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Self-directed IRA application | Custodian (via your dealer) | Opens the account |
| Transfer / rollover request form | Custodian | Authorizes the move from your old plan |
| Distribution form | Your old 401(k) plan | Releases funds as a direct rollover |
| Purchase direction letter | Custodian | Instructs the custodian to buy the metals |
| Form 1099-R (January) | Old plan | Reports the rollover; code "G" means non-taxable direct rollover |
| Form 5498 (May) | New custodian | Confirms the rollover contribution received |
Mistakes that turn a rollover into a tax bill
- Taking the check in your own name. That is an indirect rollover with 20% withheld and a 60-day clock. Always ask for a direct rollover.
- Missing the 60-day window. The IRS grants waivers only for narrow reasons (bank error, hospitalization). Do not rely on one.
- Two indirect rollovers in 12 months. The second one is a taxable distribution in full.
- Rolling Traditional money into a Roth Gold IRA by accident. That is a conversion and is taxed as income.
- Buying before the account is open. You cannot purchase metals personally and then "move them in". The custodian must buy them.
- Rolling everything into gold. Keep the allocation to 5% to 15% unless you have a specific reason not to.
Rolling over a partial balance
You do not need to choose between gold and your existing investments. A common structure: roll the old 401(k) into a standard rollover IRA at a brokerage, then transfer 10% of that IRA to the Gold IRA custodian. Both moves are tax-free, and you can adjust the split later.
Rollover FAQ
Can I roll over my 401(k) to gold while still employed?
Usually only if you are 59½ or older or your plan allows in-service distributions. Check your summary plan description or ask HR. Old 401(k)s from previous employers can be rolled over at any age.
Is a 401(k) to Gold IRA rollover taxable?
No, not if it is a direct rollover (plan to custodian). An indirect rollover is also tax-free if you redeposit the full amount, including the 20% withheld, within 60 days.
How much of my 401(k) should I roll into gold?
You do not have to roll all of it. Many investors roll a portion (often 5% to 15% of total retirement assets) into a Gold IRA and leave the rest in a conventional rollover IRA. You can split a single 401(k) between two IRAs.
How long does a rollover take?
Two to four weeks on average. The account opens in one to three days; the slow step is your old plan administrator releasing funds, which can take one to three weeks.
Can I roll a Roth 401(k) into a Gold IRA?
Yes, into a Roth Gold IRA. Roth-to-Roth rollovers are tax-free. Rolling a Traditional 401(k) into a Roth Gold IRA is a conversion and is taxable.
