What moves the gold price
- Real interest rates. Gold pays no income, so it tends to do best when inflation-adjusted yields fall.
- The U.S. dollar. Gold is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar usually weighs on the price.
- Central-bank buying. Reserve managers bought 863 tonnes in 2025 and a record 289 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026, according to the World Gold Council.
- Risk events. Wars, banking stress and fiscal worries push investors toward assets with no counterparty.
